Today we did a Follow the Direction Treasure Hunt. We had to read some directions, find our way to the station where we had to follow more directions. They used an iPad to record each activity and then had to put it all together asa presentation for the grade.
Division
Today we started looking at Division. One of the activities we did was to share cookies between 3 friends and then write a mathematical word sentence to show what we had done.
Enjoy the photos.
Chance and Data
We have been looking at chance and doing some different activities to look at how likely or unlikely something might be.
Today we did a number of activities – tossing a dice to see how many times a 6 came up, tossing a coin to see how many times heads came up, a gum all machine with coloured counters in it to guess which colour was the most likely to come out first.
Likely and Unlikely
Today we have been discussing whether things are likely or unlikely. We discussed the animals that we thought would be likely or unlikely to see in the school grounds.
The list included dogs, ants, cats, pigs, birds and chickens.
We chose which ones we thought would be likely or unlikely and then went outside to see which ones we could find.
We only found three.
Working with our visitors from Japan
On Monday we had some of the students from our sister school in Japan visit us. We divided into groups and decorated a person each. We helped the visitors learn the various English words for the different parts of the body.
We then stuck the people onto a sheet of paper and wrote some multiplication sums using each person as a group. They had to use the various body parts to write the sums. For example – 4 people meant 4 groups. 2 arms each therefore 4 groups of 2 arms = 4 x 2 = 8
It was great to see all the children working together and language was not a barrier.

Results from our Maths shape challenge
Here are the end patterns from our challenge to come up with a tessellating pattern to tile the floor of a room.
Maths Challenge
We had a Maths Challenge today.
We had to tile the floor of a room.
We therefore had to come up with a pattern that would be able to tile a floor, without any gaps and that could be repeated therefore tessellated.
We played around with the blocks first to find a pattern that fitted the rules then the kids were given a piece of paper that was their floor to draw the pattern onto. Stay tuned for the patterns tomorrow.
Shapes
Today we looked at how shapes could flip, turn and slide. We made our own shapes and then had a go at all three different ways to move them.
Exciting day
We had a very exciting day today in class. We have been writing to a school in England and today we received a package of letters from them.
We greatly enjoyed reading the letters they had sent to each of us. We wrote back to them today answering their questions and asking some of our own to learn more about them. They had also sent us some quizzes. We were able to guess a lot of the What Am I? We learnt that rats and hamsters are popular pets of these children in England.
We then decided to make an Australian Snakes and Ladders game for them. We have each drawn our own tile for the game board and decorated it with all things Australian. We then put them together to make a big game board. We are now working out the best place to put the snakes and ladders so the the game will work and be fun. Our first attempt had ladders and snakes landing on the same squares so you would get no where. We are going back to that decision in class tomorrow. Stay tuned for the final game.
We are also going to make some Guess What Number I Am? Quizzes for them.
Here is a picture of our game board without the snakes and ladders.
